Where is Topkapi Palace?

Topkapi Palace sits on the European side of Istanbul, in the Sultanahmet quarter of the Fatih district, at the very tip of the Historic Peninsula. The palace is built on Seraglio Point (Sarayburnu), the hill where the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus meet the Sea of Marmara; in other words, it stands at the city's most strategic corner, precisely where the seas intersect.

The full address is: Cankurtaran Mahallesi, Babıhümayun Caddesi No:1, 34122 Fatih/İstanbul. The main entrance gate (the Imperial Gate, Bâb-ı Hümâyun) opens onto the first courtyard, reached from the square just behind Hagia Sophia, along Bâb-ı Hümâyun Avenue between the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia.

You're lucky in terms of location: Topkapi is right in the heart of Sultanahmet, Istanbul's busiest area for historic sightseeing. Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Basilica Cistern and Gülhane Park are all within walking distance. This makes Topkapi a stop you can plan not on its own but together with neighbouring monuments on the same day.

By tram: the most practical way (the T1 line)

The easiest, cheapest and most traffic-free way to get to Topkapi Palace is the T1 tram line. Running between Kabataş and Bağcılar, this line passes right through the middle of Sultanahmet and connects easily to every part of the city.

  • Gülhane stop — the stop closest to the palace's first courtyard. After getting off, a pleasant uphill walk of about 5 minutes alongside Gülhane Park brings you to the palace gate.
  • Sultanahmet stop — you get off in front of Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque; from there, crossing the square, you reach the palace in about 10 minutes. If you'll also be touring Hagia Sophia the same day, this stop makes sense.

To board the tram you just need an İstanbulkart; you can buy and top up the card at the machines in every metro, ferry and bus station. If you're coming from the city centre (for example Taksim), you can take the funicular down to Kabataş and change there for the T1 tram.

View of the Bosphorus and Seraglio Point from Topkapi Palace

Why on Seraglio Point?

Topkapi's location is no coincidence. Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror deliberately had the palace built on the city's furthest promontory, Seraglio Point: from here the trade ships entering the Golden Horn, the fleet passing along the Bosphorus and the sea route opening onto the Marmara could all be controlled at once.

For the visitor this means: when you come out into the fourth courtyard, you're met by that unique view of the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn that sultans gazed upon for centuries. The palace being high above sea level, on a hill, also means you'll walk a gentle slope to reach it; comfortable shoes make things easier.

Marmaray, bus and other public transport

The tram is not the only option. Thanks to its location, you can reach Topkapi by several different public-transport lines:

  • Marmaray: the Sirkeci station of the suburban line that runs beneath the Bosphorus is the nearest Marmaray stop to the palace. From Sirkeci you walk up to the palace along Gülhane Park in about 10–12 minutes. For those coming from the Asian side (for example Üsküdar or Söğütlüçeşme), Marmaray is the fastest route.
  • Bus: the Eminönü and Sirkeci stops offer bus connections to many parts of the city. You can get off at Eminönü and walk uphill towards Sultanahmet to reach the palace. At busy hours the tram is generally faster than the bus.
  • Metro transfer: those coming on the M2 (Yenikapı–Hacıosman) line can get off at Vezneciler or Yenikapı and change to the tram or Marmaray.

By ferry: the most enjoyable route

While you're in Istanbul, try approaching Topkapi from the sea as well. Eminönü pier is the ferry pier closest to the palace, with regular scheduled connections to many points such as Üsküdar, Kadıköy and Beşiktaş.

After arriving at Eminönü by ferry, you enter Gülhane Park from the Sirkeci direction along the shore and reach the palace in about 12–15 minutes, walking through the park or following the tram tracks. Especially if you're staying on the Kadıköy or Üsküdar side, this short ferry trip in the morning with a Bosphorus view can be the loveliest start to the day. The İstanbulkart is valid on ferries too.

🚶

Tip: if you're already within the Sultanahmet area, you don't need to take any vehicle. Bâb-ı Hümâyun Avenue, starting beside Hagia Sophia, takes you straight to the palace gate; from most hotels the walk to the palace is between 5 and 15 minutes. In the Historic Peninsula, the fastest way to get around is usually on foot.

How do you get to Topkapi Palace from the airport?

There are two main airports for those arriving in Istanbul by plane; both are a similar distance from Sultanahmet but on different sides of the city.

  • Istanbul Airport (IST): on the European side, about 50 km from the palace. The most economical route is the M11 metro to Gayrettepe, then on via the M2 and transfers to the tram. A more direct option is to take the HAVAİST airport bus towards Sultanahmet / Beyazıt. By taxi the journey takes about 45–75 minutes depending on traffic.
  • Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW): on the Asian side, about 50 km from the palace. You can reach Sirkeci via the M4 metro and a Marmaray transfer, then walk to the palace. The HAVABÜS buses run towards Kadıköy / Taksim; from there you continue by tram or ferry. The taxi journey is usually between 50 and 80 minutes.

The general rule: if you have luggage and are arriving for the first time, the most comfortable approach is to transfer straight to your hotel, drop off your things, then go to the palace by public transport.

Arriving by car and the parking situation

Frankly, we don't recommend going to Topkapi by private car. Sultanahmet consists of narrow historic streets, many of them closed to vehicle traffic; there is no large car park reserved for visitors right in front of the palace gate.

If you do come by car all the same, you'll need to use the paid İSPARK car parks around Gülhane or Sultanahmet; these car parks fill up quickly in high season and their fees are high. If you arrive by taxi, ask the driver to drop you at the Gülhane Park entrance or at Hagia Sophia square; you walk to the palace gate from there. In short: in this area a vehicle is not a convenience but, much of the time, a burden — public transport is always faster and more trouble-free.

Arriving by taxi and private vehicle

Coming by taxi is possible but has a few subtleties. When you say "Topkapi Palace" to the driver, they usually drop you at Hagia Sophia square or the Gülhane Park entrance; you cannot drive right up to the palace gate because the inner streets are pedestrianised. So plan from the start to cover the last 3–5 minutes on foot.

Traffic is the greatest uncertainty of arriving in Sultanahmet by taxi. At busy hours the tram can cover the same distance in half the time of a taxi. For vehicles you call via an app, choose as a meeting point not the narrow side streets but wide, recognisable spots like Hagia Sophia square or the Gülhane tram stop. Since vehicle access to the Historic Peninsula can be restricted at certain times, it pays to be flexible.

Access with disabilities and with a pushchair

Because Topkapi is a historic building, its ground is largely paved with stone, uneven and sloping in places; this can create some difficulties for visitors with reduced mobility. Even so, since the courtyards are wide and largely flat, a significant part of the first, second and third courtyards can be toured by wheelchair.

Some kiosks, the upper floors of the Harem and the older interiors have staircases and thresholds; at these points full access may not be possible. Those arriving with a pushchair will meet the same stone ground. For current accessibility arrangements, ramps and companion policies, we recommend confirming via official channels before your visit. Let us also remind you that there is a security check at the entrance gate and that large bags are inspected.

Timing note: the palace is closed on Tuesdays and can be toured between 09:00 and 18:00 (last admission ~17:00). Plan your transport accordingly; for example, if you'll be going straight from the airport to the palace, prefer the morning or late-morning hours so as not to arrive very close to closing. For details, see the opening hours page.

From the tram stop to the palace gate: step by step

The point that most confuses first-time visitors is how to walk to the palace after getting off the tram. Here's the easiest description:

  • From the Gülhane stop: when you get off the tram you'll see the stone wall and large gate of Gülhane Park. Without entering the park, keep the wall on your right and walk uphill; following the signs, within 4–5 minutes you'll be in front of the palace's first courtyard (the Imperial Gate). If you prefer, you can also walk through the park and reach the palace area from the upper exit.
  • From the Sultanahmet stop: when you get off, head for Hagia Sophia. After passing Hagia Sophia and the square with the fountain, continue along the right side of Hagia Sophia; Bâb-ı Hümâyun Avenue takes you straight to the palace gate. Total walk 8–10 minutes.

If you struggle to find your way on either route, you can ask for "Topkapi Palace first courtyard" or "Bâb-ı Hümâyun"; the area is used to officials and direction signs.

A one-day Sultanahmet route

The greatest advantage of the location is that you don't leave Topkapi on its own. The surrounding monuments are so close that, in a good order, you can comfortably tour several at once in a single day. The walking route we suggest is as follows:

  • Morning: Topkapi Palace at opening (including the Treasury and Harem, ~3 hours).
  • Afternoon: leave the palace and walk a few minutes to Hagia Sophia, then the Blue Mosque across the square.
  • Late afternoon: the cool of the Basilica Cistern; then a break in Gülhane Park.
  • Early evening: go down to Eminönü for sunset shopping at the Spice Bazaar and, if you like, a ferry back.

Because they're all within walking distance, this route requires almost no public transport. Just remember that each stop has its own ticket and timetable; match the plan with the visiting hours page.

Which side are you coming from?

Istanbul is a city of two sides; where you're coming from determines the fastest route:

  • European side, Taksim / Beyoğlu: take the funicular down from Taksim to Kabataş, then come to Gülhane on the T1 tram. A pleasant line of about 25–35 minutes.
  • European side, Beşiktaş: reach Kabataş by a short walk or by bus and board the T1 tram.
  • Asian side, Üsküdar / Kadıköy: the fastest is Marmaray. Board Marmaray from Üsküdar and get off at Sirkeci, then walk via Gülhane Park. Alternatively, you can cross to Eminönü by ferry and walk — this route is preferred for the view.
  • Out of town / coach station: from the Esenler or Bayrampaşa coach station, take the M1 metro to Yenikapı, then reach Sultanahmet by tram or a Marmaray transfer.

Whichever side you come from, the last step is usually the same: get off at Gülhane or Sirkeci and take a short walk.

The green area of Gülhane Park adjoining the palace walls

Gülhane Park: the palace's garden

Gülhane Park, which you'll pass on your way to Topkapi, was once in fact the palace's outer garden. Today it's an open, free and shady park; ideal for catching your breath before or after your palace visit.

It also has a practical advantage: on a hot day, walking up the slope from the tram to the palace through the park, in the shade of the trees, is far more comfortable. The upper end of the park connects to the palace area and the Archaeological Museums, so in a single walk you link several stops at once.

📍

Map tip: type "Topkapı Palace Museum" into your navigation app and set the destination as the main entrance (the Imperial Gate); some apps may mistakenly direct you to the staff gates at the back. Keep walking mode on — in Sultanahmet's narrow streets the driving route comes out needlessly long.

Where to stay near Topkapi?

If you want to tour the palace early in the morning, before the crowds build, the smartest choice is to stay in Sultanahmet. From most hotels in the area the palace is a 5–15-minute walk; what's more, Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Basilica Cistern and Gülhane Park are all within the same walking radius.

The areas around Sirkeci, Eminönü and Cağaloğlu are also practical alternatives, being close both to the palace and to Marmaray and ferry connections. To look in detail at which area suits you and at accommodation suggestions, take a look at our hotel guide.

Now that you've sorted out the location, the next step is planning: complete your visit with the ticket prices and visiting hours pages.

Frequently asked questions

Topkapi Palace is on the European side of Istanbul, in the Sultanahmet quarter of the Fatih district, on Seraglio Point at the tip of the Historic Peninsula. Full address: Cankurtaran, Babıhümayun Caddesi No:1, 34122 Fatih/İstanbul.

The most practical way is the T1 tram line. Get off at the Gülhane stop and walk about 5 minutes to reach the palace; the Sultanahmet stop is also ~10 minutes away. You can also go by Marmaray (Sirkeci), by ferry from Eminönü pier and on foot from within Sultanahmet.

The stop closest to the palace's first courtyard is the Gülhane (T1) stop; from there you reach the main gate with about a 5-minute walk. If you're coming from the Hagia Sophia side, the Sultanahmet stop can also be used.

Both airports are about 50 km from the palace. From IST you arrive by HAVAİST bus or a metro + tram transfer, and from SAW by metro + Marmaray or HAVABÜS. By taxi the time is usually between 45 and 80 minutes depending on traffic.

There is no large car park reserved for visitors in front of the palace gate, and most of Sultanahmet's streets are closed to vehicles. Those arriving by car use the paid İSPARK car parks in the area; however, public transport (tram, Marmaray, ferry) is usually faster and more trouble-free.

Within walking distance are Hagia Sophia (~3 min), the Blue Mosque (~5 min), the Basilica Cistern (~6 min), Gülhane Park (~2 min), the Istanbul Archaeological Museums in the first courtyard (~4 min) and the Spice Bazaar towards Eminönü (~12–15 min). The area is very well suited to touring several monuments at once in a single day.
